Royal Journal Press

A printer is judged on the second run, not the first.

Anyone can make one good copy. The question an institution should ask is whether volume seventeen will match volume one, three years and two staff changes later. Everything below exists to answer that.

Practice

How we run

Six working rules, each of which costs us something and is kept anyway.

  • The specification is written once and held by us. A reprint is set up from our sheet, so where the job runs never changes what the book is.
  • We are not tied to one machine. Regular work runs in house; at scale it goes to a partner press, so you are not paying for idle capacity either way.
  • Nothing is plated before written proof approval, and colour is approved on a measured proof rather than on a screen.
  • One reference copy of every job is retained by us, so the next run is compared against an object rather than against a description.
  • We attend the make-ready and pass the first-off. Corrections during a run are recorded on the run sheet, not absorbed silently.
  • One contact owns the job from quote to dispatch, and your commercial relationship is with us throughout.
Placement

Where the work runs

Regular work runs on our own floor. At scale we place it with a partner press, on our specification and under our supervision. We are not tied to one machine, so the run goes where it is best made rather than where there happens to be space.
